Atonement guide

2. The scene between Robbie and Cecilia at the fountain is important in the story because it's the starting point of how Briony sees Robbie and how it makes him been guilty of a crime he didn't commit, although it wasn't the most important it helped Briony making her conclusion of who raped Lola.
Lola also helped the decision of Briony because she didn't say the truth when she had to and told Briony that it was Robbie, the sex maniac.

8. Yes, the end did surprise me, I didn't expect the death of two of the main characters, Robbie and Cecilia, after all the effort the made to make their relationship work. Is also dissapointing that Briony never really told anyone of her family that Robbie was innocent after all. The other thing that surprised me was the marriage of Lola with Paul Marshal, she married a man who has raped her before, that's wrong in so many levels.

Assessment task partner

Rationale 2/2
It's very clear the process behind the task and gives us a spotlight of what's going on.
Task and content 6/8
The writer doesn't give a sufficient explanation to the examples given and doesn't go further in the tries of explanations.
Organization 3/5
The text is disorganized, there is no conjunction between ideas, it goes from ideas to a pseud conclusion and then back to some other ideas.
Language and style 4/5
There are minor orthographic errors, but this doesn't change the sense of the text.

The text globally shows that the student knows the topic and he has certain knowledge of it. It tries to show his ideas and explain then and fails in some extent. He proves his points but gives unnecessary turns and doesn't hit the point.

Save The World

                                             Save The World - Minimarket

Standing again there like every day, thinking why the hell he picked that job, perhaps the money was enough to make him be there. She entered again, every single day passing by glancing at him and giving him a smile making him give her the best offers in the hole town. Hello. It's 5,99. Bye. That was their conversation, every single time he couldn't say another word, but why was the question.
His daydreaming was stopped by the sudden destruction of the tips jar, two man with their face covered entered the little shop and were with a bat, that for his horror it was covered in dried blood. Who was the victim? He was next? Without knowing what to do he kept just staring the thieves like they were to say "A burger please""You'd like some fries with that". Suddenly the biggest one of them pushed him and he felt on his back against the wall, he put his headphones on :"Save the World" the only song that could make him be calm at that point.
And that's how I will lose my job he kept saying to himself but out of nowhere two dog appeared form the backdoor one of them, a corgi with black and brown stains on his body kept on bitting the jeans of the one thief trying to open the cashier, then the other one, a french bulldog jumped, reached the hoodie and made him give a strike with his head to the table, knocking him down. After this, the other guy ran away, while been followed by both dogs.
He never liked dogs but now he had two sleeping in his bed and who would thought that they were the ones who saved the world that night.

The Gods Must be Crazy Narrative Techniques

The narrator in "The Gods Must Be Crazy" by Jamie Uye uses a third person point of view to tell us about The Kalahari, the desert that looks like it's paradise but it's nothing like it and that no one lives there, except for the Bushmen, a tribe that doesn't know the civilized man, and have no problems at all although the little possibilities to live in a place like The Kalahari are, and also they have solutions for everything, education, eating, drinking, in-between others. The narration is a direct narration because the narrator talks directly to us and makes us feel we are the main audience of the text, using the word use is the best clue we have to know this. The speech is reported speech because the narrator is telling us a story, in this case a documentary of a group of people who live in The Kalahari, one of the places where I wouldn't like to go for my vacation, where people only go to die, except for the Bushmen. The tense is present, this is visible through out the whole text, all the words are used in present tense, this is because the text tries to be a documentary.

Written Analysis

"Lilian" is a poem written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, british writer who was the Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland during Queen Victoria's reign and is well known for his use of sounds in his poems.
Lilian in English is a name used representing the Lilium, that is a flower known for it's pureness and it's beauty, and that's why this title suits with the description that is given of the Fairy Lilian.

It starts calling the fairy, asking her if she loves the him (the lyric speaker), but gets no answer from part of Lilian, who juste stares and laughs. In the second stanza, the  lyric speaker tells us about the beauty and perfection of this fairy, telling us a physical and physiological description and gets rejected again. In the next stanza he keeps telling us the good things about this fairy but not as long as the second stanza, because he starts to realize that she is not meant to be with him, this is proven in the last stanza when gets angry and gives the possibility of killing her is she doesn't talk.
The poem starts with the lyric speaker tells us  the swiftness of the fairy, but this has a second meaning, that she moves so fast that he will never be able to catch her, this is proven in the next 4 verses, when he says that when he asks for an answer she laughs at him because Lilian thinks it's a joke but that's not what happens, we know that the lyric speaker it's dying inside because he says that she is just being cruel.
In the second stanza we found out that the lyric speaker has fell deeply in love and can't forget her but Lilian is just looking through him, we can infer that the fairy is just a little girl who is not searching for love, that's why she finds funny everything that has to do with love and can't understand what he is feeling. We can see evidence about this in various parts of the poem, like in the verses 13 and 14 when he says 2 qualities of a little girl, being innocent and simple and the use of a wimple, what gives us the idea that she is virgin, or holy. more evidence can be found in the next two verses when the lyric speaker tells us about the dimples that form in her face and the redness of her cheeks, classic image of a little girl smiling.
In the next stanza we found more signs of beauty of the little Lilian, she is shown as a cheerful person that can't be other way, this shown when the lyric speaker tells us that she is gaiety without eclipse, this is in relation with children, because it is normal for kids to have no worries because worries are things that accumulate as people grow up. We can also get more description of her physical attributes and we finally get to know that that silver treble laughter, that harmonic laugh of the fairy is making the lyric speaker weep because of this impossible love.
In the last stanza we see that the lyrics speaker has nothing else to do but pray because this love will never happen and to a point that is he hears her laughter once again he will have to kill her.

Within the poem we can identify two shifts, the first one goes form the start to verse 25, that talks about how she is so perfect and how she just rejects him. The second one goes from verse 26 to 30 and talks about how this constant rejection makes him go completely insane and just wants to crush poor Lilian who only laughed at him.
The title Lilian fits perfectly with the character that appears in the poem, a white colored skin, beautiful and pure girl who is followed by a guy who can't have her because she is not meant to be with someone at her "age". The main theme is the unrequited love and how this makes a man go insane.

Tennyson uses varies of devices, for example, using metaphors through the whole poem, using crimson threaded lips, meaning of the redness of her lips, silver-treble laughter also, meaning that she has an harmonic laugh, black-beaded eyes meaning that she has a black eye color, and uses baby-roses also, meaning that she has pink cheeks as a kid would normally have and uses gaiety without eclipse telling about her attitude about everything, just smiling and laughing. He also uses the simile like a rose-leaf I will crush thee, because she is as delicate as a rose leaf and could be killed with the use of only 2 fingers.

In conclusion, Tennyson uses Lilian as the classic unrequited love, that one girl that you always want but you never have, the now called "friendzone" in some extent. He makes a great use of  rhetorical devices to give you that feeling of falling love again, and to make you feel those things that make love an special moment in anyone's love, seeing that smile and thinking is perfection itself, hearing that laugh that makes you grin and just wanting to hear it more often, but everything has got an end, and that's when the lyric speaker just wants her to shut up, he doesn't want to hear her more because he knows that that perfection is not for him and it's reserved for someone better.

English Exam: Bias and Society

Candidate: Ignacio Ruiz

Rationale

The past three weeks we have been reviewing what media is and how bias is constantly being used by them. We were told to make a blog entrance, speech or an opinion column about bias and its effects. I chose the blog entrance because you can use informal language and it is easier to address an audience as big as the Internet becaus you can use any topic you want and someone out there will get it (U.S.A. and Syria). Being able to write about whatever we like gives us (the students) the freedom to write and give our opinion about what we like or we would like to give our opinion. Not having an specific audience helps at the moment of choosing words and of choosing ideas. I have been reading news about the conflicts between United States and ISIS and I thought it was a good idea to give my opinion about those conflicts. Also how the Muslim community has been defamed by media and also by people all around the world.
In one sentence my text is about how bias is destroying the image of things and how it is important to be aware of what is going on in the world and to not trust any media, because it makes people think like the media when you're supposed to have your own opinion, not making you have own.

Written Task

Bias and Society

Hey guys, it's me again, Ignacio, and I'm ready to tell you the truth about some things that happen in our society. Bias is hiding, distorting information from our eyes. This can be through many resources that the media can use at any moment, and three of them are strictly related to language, but why? Well, that's because that's the easiest way to make us believe things and keep us away from the truth and those type of bias are the ones that I will try to explain in this blog.
First of all, the news tries to make us take a side on any problem and be against the other position that is shown. An example of this is how the U.S. marines are portrayed in ads, movies, video games, etc. They show us these badass soldiers, eliminating enemies of the country, fighting against the evil forces of ISIS and saving the people in Syria, but obviously the truth is, things are not like this. News reports don’t show the other side of the story, the suffering of people in Syria and people in their own army and how the advances they do in those wars make the country enter slowly into a crisis. This technique used is called framing, the media just doesn’t show the other aspects of the theme that is being touched, and stays strictly in one position to it. In the case of U.S.A. and Syria, although the States are trying to save the country form literally disappearing, there is no mention whatsoever of the ambition the country has for the oil that lies within the barren lands of Syria.
People will leave comments down below telling me how stupid I am and probably worse things, but I don’t really care at all, because in your insides you feel it, you know that something is wrong, and yes. That’s right. Something is not right. You’ve been brainwashed. You really think that the U.S.A is the actual hero of the story? You think that Muslims are all terrorists? And this question leads to the second form of bias: limiting debate. It is known that the classic white Anglo-Saxon average man of the country believes that all people who were a white robe, have a grown beard and speaks in a foreign language are terrorists, and we all know that this is not true, why do you think Trump has so much support in the elections? He is racist and laughs at everyone, and that’s enough to make people go wild. He actually said that they should make illegal all Muslims and it made him have more voters, but why? This is because the media shows us that all the terrorist attacks in every country are being made by ISIS or Muslim extremists, making the audience think that every one of them is a bad guy. If you see a Muslim, what is the first that comes to mind? Allahu Akbar or Terrorist. It is a shame to see that people are like this, it is awful.
Another form of bias is omission, this happens when media doesn't show us a part of relevant information that could make the opinion of anyone change. For instance, if we have a man, let's call him  Dave, that is diagnosed with a terminal cancer and asks his friend Jack to kill him, the media could omit the part that Dave had the cancer and that Jack just helped a friend as last resource, leaving Jack as a murderer and not like a good person. Using America as example (again) last year the country bombed an ISIS base in Syria, and the news seconds later posted an article that went like this: "Heroes destroy ISIS base in Syria" claiming that the general who took the decision should be recognized as a national hero. U.S.A. nationalist speeches "forgot" to say that in that same bombing the explosions caused several infrastructural damages of civilian houses and also that the bomb killed more than 20 Syrians.
The last form of bias that we can detect is the word choice, that is using certain words to approach the reader to make a message more powerful. Believe it or not, this works a lot and is used more often than you think. For example, is different to say "you should buy this product" than "buy now", obviously the second one is way more effective because it gives the buyer a sense of confidence with the product that they're selling. In politics, saying "Frank won against Dan" is less effective that saying "Frank destroyed Dan" or "Dan lost by 1 vote" the message doesn't change but the impact does. We can't move on without using an example from U.S.A. The best example I could found it was the poster from WWII "I want you" starring Uncle Sam. This is obviously more convincing that a blank paper saying "Join the army" , because it gives you the choice and tell you that the one who needs you is the whole country and that it only needs you.
In conclusion, be careful, the media master (the one who provides the media) could be brainwashing you slowly and trying to make you say that all the things that I said are lies, but don't believe it, I'm the truth in all this topic, be critical and rational people, think about it, I would not waste my time writing this if I didn't knew about the topic, stay with me, be media smart, delete the bias and come live a clean and wonderful life like mine. Comment any doubts, I will try to answer them as quickly as possible, and hopefully I will be able to help you. Without anything more to say I'm out, PEACE.
